Alaska is a picturesque beautiful place. I could never get tired of living here. The winters are something less to be desired, but after a short time away from the frigid cold misery, something inside draws me back. The salt water, the landscape, the freedom is something I can not possibly live without. I am looking forward to this spring. We have so many fun exciting adventures planned. Our first stop is going to be in Sitka, Alaska this spring. We are going to be touring the Russian Capitol and talking about the Native traditions along with filming the exciting Herring Fishery and going a little sport fishing for spirng steelhead in some remote lakes. We invite you to join us this spring for an exciting adventure in Sitka, Alaska!

Thanksgiving Day Rescue

Hi All,

We got a distress call Thanksgiving evening. Two guys out deer hunting anchored up their boat and went to shore in their raft to go deer hunting. While they were hunting their boat drug anchor and bashed up on the rocks and sank. When they got back to shore from getting their deer they went out to their sinking boat and salvaged most of their gear and a VHF raido. They said they would be O.K. and build a fire and be ready at daybreak. So day after Thanksgiving we headed out and got their GPS coordinates and located them by theor flairs and fire. They were fine and had 2 deer. We loaded their gear and gave them a ride to the dock. Come to find out they are Coast Guard guys! They are helicopter pilots for the Kodiak Station Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter. They said they were probably never going to live this down. At least they did not have to be rescued by the official Helicopter! Well hope you all had a good Thanksgiving Holiday.

Thanksgiving Day

Hi All,

We got invited to our friends 110 ft live aboard research vessel for Thanksgiving. We had Turkey, Stuffing and all the trimmings. We even had Wild Goose and some Wild Duck. It was a fantastic dinner! We watched football, they have a satellite TV dish on their vessel! We have been busy working and had a very nice holiday. We hope you all had a nice holiday and we are back to work trying to keep up on our firewood pile. The day of Thanksgiving we got a distress call from some guys that were out deer hunting. They anchored their boat offshore and when they went to the beach to go hunting their anchor drug and their boat bashed up on the rocks and sank. They had supplies and built a fire. The next morning George and the Captain went out in a landing craft and rescued them. Come to find out they were Coast Guard Guys! They said they were going to get a ration for having to be rescued, well it is a lot less embarrasing than being rescued by the official Coast Guard Helicopter! Hi All,

Here is a nice picture I took that I would like to share with you. We have been helping our friend with a survey on their 33 acre parcel of property in Kodiak. We have been camping out for the past few days. This is the view of where one of the cabins are being built. We saw a Humpback Whale today. We have been in a different part of Alaska this part of the year usually in Southeast Alaska. In Southeast Alaska the Whales hang out on the Lost Coast (area between Cordova and Yakutat) during the Spring and Summer and they usually leave around the end of August. Seeing a Humpback whale this late in Alaska is surprising to us, at least. We would like to study the migration a lot more. We did a lot of studies with researchers in Alaska and would like to continue our research in this area. It is interesting to know that we can watch the Whales in this area all the way in to November. We saw as many as 45-60 Humpback Whales at different times in the months of October and November. We hope you all are doing well and stay tuned for more posts!

Life in the Wilderness

We had a few nice days and did a lot of work outside. We went deer hunting and made a cargo net for our friends research vessel so he can pick up big loads with his 2500lb crane. We got some more fire wood put up. Good thing we did, a big storm hit and it blew over 50 knots. It is monsoon raining. Cold rain mixed with snow. Well going to go brave the elements and carry in some wood.

Fish for the Freezer

Here is the stringer of fish we got yesterday near Whale pass. While fishing we saw a bunch of Whales. I had no idea whales were in Alaska this late. I thought they go to mexico and Hawaii about now. Whales are very smart, them heading for the warm climate is a very smart thing to do. Alaska winters can be brutal. It is rainy and cold and I do not even want to venture outside. George went and braved to bone chilling rain to get some firewood to keep us warm. Thank goodness.

DEER BUTCHERING DAY

I butchered the deer today. This is the end product. About of 50 pounds of meat. We have deer roasts, stir fry meat and stew meat. We need to get more to fill our freezer.

WORK DAY

We went and set out our subsistance halibut skate hoping to hit the jackpot. We need to put up fish for the winter. We got some salmon and deer, but it would be nice to have a pile of halibut to fill our freezer. When we set out our skate of 30 hooks we searched the beaches for fire wood. We are burning 2 woodstoves and need to supply up on firewood to keep us warm. This is about a cord of firewood.

Going to town

We tried to go to town a few days ago but the last storm we had it rained so hard that it washed out the bridge that we need to cross to get there. From the boat landing where we tie up it is about 20 miles to get to Kodiak. Of course the day I forgot my camera something out of the ordinary happens I would have liked to share a picture with you of what that wash out looked like. So we found out by an air taxi pilot that the bridge was fixed. Thank goodness, we have not been to town for over 2 weeks. Normally that would not be a problem, but we are nearly out of fresh supplies and a few creature comforts. When you live in the bush people need their creature comforts or it makes living in the remote wilderness difficult sometimes.

In Icy Bay we had the luxury of having an EAS (Essential Air Service) plane that flies near our cabin a few times a week to bring us mail and supplies. Here you just simply go without if you are not stocked up. We do not exactly have a 7/11 down the street. Once I get supplied up I can stay comfortably out in the wildernesss for literally months at a time. As long as I have internet! I have lived in the past for months at a time out in remote locations with nothing but a Marine VHS raido and an AM raido that played at night. That was before I got spoiled on Sat internet. i used to have Satellite TV, but the reciever burned up and we could not get a service tech out to fix it so we just go without. There is plenty of news online. We also use Skype and Vonage to stay in touch with the world. Life is good, going to town, YEA!

George went deer hunting today. He was successful! We need to add to our supply of Halibut, Salmon and Crab to our freezer to have enough food to get us through the tough Alaskan winter. Alaskan residents are allowed 4 deer per person. This will be a good winter if we can get more deer to add to this one. When we get more deer I will be able to make my own burger and sausage. It is the best organic meat you could ask for. Free range meat! Looking forward to a deer roast!

These are some shrimp pots we are going to put out. Alaskan residents can put out shrimp pot for subsistance use. George and I subsist on Alaska's bounty of Crab, Shrimp, Fish, Deer, wild Mountain Goat, and Moose. Kodiak is special, there is a population of Elk here.

It is stormin normin out here on Afognak Island. It is blowing at LEAST 50 miles per hour and Raining horizontally. I do not want to be outside thank goodness I got stocked up on firewood yesterday before this storm took force.
